Freezing point. At riding pace, 0°C feels closer to −1°C on exposed skin, and a descent or a headwind takes it lower. This is full winter kit, and every extremity needs its own proper protection.
Here's the kit for a steady ride on an overcast day with a light breeze. Unlike warmer temperatures, it barely changes with the weather — what changes is the road.
0°C kit — steady ride, light breeze
This is VeloReady's full winter kit. Clear lenses help too: below freezing, cold air makes eyes stream at speed.
THE KIT BARELY CHANGES — THAT'S THE POINT
At warmer temperatures, sun, wind and rain each shift the kit by a piece or two. At 0°C, VeloReady gives the same full winter list whether it's sunny, windy, wet, snowing or dark. You're already at the warmest setting for every part of the body, so there's nothing left to add.
The one real exception is effort. Riding hard, you make enough heat to drop a weight: a standard merino base instead of the heavyweight one, thermal tights instead of heavy ones, and a wind jacket instead of the insulated winter jacket. Hands, feet and head stay in full winter kit regardless — they don't warm up with effort the way your core does.
WHY LOBSTER GLOVES
Below freezing, fingers inside separate glove fingers each lose heat on their own. Lobster gloves group them in pairs — the warmth of a mitten with enough control to brake and shift. They're the single biggest comfort upgrade for riding at 0°C. More on glove weights in cold hands, cold feet.
MANAGE SWEAT, OR IT FREEZES
Overdressing is a real risk at freezing point. Sweat soaks your base layer on the climb, then chills you on the descent. Open the jacket zip on the way up and close it before you go down. A coffee stop is the coldest part of a winter ride, so keep it short or bring a spare buff.
ICE IS THE REAL RISK
At 0°C, the kit can keep you warm on almost any ride. It can't keep your tyres on the road. Black ice looks like a wet patch, and it forms first on bridges, in shade, in dips, and anywhere meltwater runs across the road and refreezes. It's most likely early in the morning and after dark.
Ride smoothly: no sudden braking, no sharp leaning, and brake upright before corners. Run slightly lower tyre pressure, choose main roads that have been gritted, and avoid painted markings and metal covers. If roads are properly icy, it's a day for the indoor trainer.
HOW CONDITIONS CHANGE IT
The kit above is the baseline. Here's what VeloReady changes when the conditions or your effort do:
| Conditions | What changes |
|---|---|
| Sunny and calm | Same kit, with sunglasses. The sun barely registers at freezing point. |
| Windy | Same kit — zip everything to the top and pull the buff over your chin. |
| Rain or sleet | Same full winter kit, already at its warmest. A water-resistant winter jacket matters, and so does grip: freezing rain glazes roads quickly. |
| Snow | Same kit. Slush spray is colder than the air, so overshoes and tights earn their place. |
| Easy ride | Same kit. Don't trim anything — an easy pace makes the least heat. |
| Hard effort | A standard merino base, thermal tights instead of heavy ones, and a wind jacket instead of the winter jacket. Gloves, skull cap and overshoes stay. |
| Before sunrise or after dark | Same kit — and the most likely time for ice. |

The winter jacket on a hard ride
Full winter kit is right for a steady or easy ride. On a hard effort it turns into a sauna, and the sweat freezes on the way down. Layer a wind jacket instead.
Assuming a wet patch is just wet
At 0°C, the shiny patch on a bridge or in the shade is often ice. Treat every one as if it is.
Cold feet from the start
Feet that are cold when you set off rarely warm up. Put overshoes on indoors, keep shoes at room temperature before the ride, and don't squeeze thick socks into tight shoes.
QUICK QUESTIONS
Is it safe to cycle at 0 degrees?
The kit can keep you warm; the risk is ice. Check for black ice on bridges, shaded corners and anywhere water runs across the road, ride smoothly, and choose gritted main roads. If the roads are icy, ride indoors.
What should I wear cycling below freezing?
A heavyweight merino base layer, a thermal long-sleeve jersey, heavy thermal bib tights and an insulated winter jacket, plus lobster gloves, a thermal skull cap, a neck warmer, neoprene overshoes and winter socks.
Do I need a winter jacket at 0°C?
For a steady or easy ride, yes. On a hard effort, a wind jacket over merino and a thermal jersey is usually enough — you'll generate the heat yourself.
